How Long Does a Social Services Assessment Take?
The length of a social services assessment depends on the type of assessment being conducted and the complexity of the case. However, in most cases, a Children’s Social Care Assessment should be completed within 45 working days from the date the referral is made.
Types of Social Services Assessments & Timeframes
Child and Family Assessment (CFA)
- This is the most common assessment carried out when concerns are raised about a child’s welfare.
- It should be completed within 45 working days.
- Social workers will visit your home, speak to your child, and gather information from professionals (e.g., teachers, doctors).
Section 47 Child Protection Investigation
- If social services believe a child is at risk of significant harm, they will conduct a Section 47 enquiry.
- This must be started immediately and should be completed within 10 working days.
- If the risk is serious, the case may escalate to a Child Protection Conference or even care proceedings.
Pre-Birth Assessment
- If social services have concerns about an unborn baby, they may start a Pre-Birth Assessment.
- This usually begins around 16-20 weeks of pregnancy and should be completed before birth.
Viability Assessment (for Family Carers)
- If a family member or friend wants to care for a child instead of foster care, social services will conduct a Viability Assessment.
- This is usually completed within a few weeks but can take longer if a full Kinship or Special Guardianship Assessment is required.
What Happens After a Social Services Assessment?
Once the assessment is completed, social services will decide:
- No Further Action – If there is no evidence of harm or risk, the case may be closed.
- Child in Need Plan – If support is needed but there is no immediate risk, a Child in Need Plan may be put in place.
- Child Protection Plan – If social services believe the child is at risk of significant harm, they may place them on a Child Protection Plan.
- Care Proceedings – In serious cases, social services may apply to the court for a Care Order to remove the child.
Can I Challenge a Social Services Assessment?
Yes. If you disagree with the findings, you have the right to:
- Request a copy of the assessment report and review its contents.
- Provide your own evidence (e.g., medical records, statements from professionals, parenting courses completed).
- Seek legal advice if you believe social services have acted unfairly or misrepresented your situation.
