How long does a Child in Need Plan last?

A Child in Need Plan does not have a fixed expiry date. Instead, it stays in place for as long as the local authority—and, ideally, you—believe the support is necessary. In practice, the plan is reviewed every three to six months. At each review the professionals involved ask whether the agreed goals have been met and whether the child’s needs can now be managed through ordinary services such as school, health visitors or a GP.

If the objectives have been achieved, social services will usually end the CIN Plan and close the case. If progress is partial, the plan can be updated with new targets and timescales. Where fresh concerns arise (or existing worries deepen) the matter may escalate to a Child Protection Plan, which involves stricter oversight. The guiding principle throughout is the child’s welfare, so the plan lasts only as long as it adds real value and safeguards the child’s health and development.
